How to request books in alternate format

If you need your textbooks in alternate/digital format to allow for audible access, the DRC can assist students in the procurement process.  To start the procurement process, please follow the following steps:

  •  You will need an initial referral from your DRC consultant. The DRC has free software for PC and MAC users to access in order to allow digital versions of class materials and textbooks to be read aloud.  You will be given instructions on how to access that software upon your approval for the use of digital books.
  • There is no charge for the alternate format textbooks but you will need to provide a copy of your book purchase receipt. This is required by publishers to insure that students are purchasing a copy of the textbooks.
  • Upon receipt of your book request and a copy of your purchase receipt for requested books, we will begin to process your request, you will be notified if your books are readily available in digital format.  If we can receive a digital file from the publisher no other action will be required you will be notified when your books have been uploaded to your online textbook library file.  If we are unable to get a digital version of your book, which means the copyright may be too old for the book to be on file in a digital file, we will need you to provide a copy of your textbook and we will scan and produce the digital file. If your book must be disassembled for scanning, we will re-bind the book using an in-house spiral binding process.

Campus Education and Advocacy Presentations

We offer three types of presentations, which are customizable by audience. Please note that in order to best serve our students, we are limited in our availability for presentations during the first six weeks of autumn semester.

  1. DRC Overview: This presentation provides an overview of our office’s mission, services, and registration process. For instructor audiences, we can also provide an overview of the accommodation management process.
  2. Creating Access Together: This presentation provides an introduction to the principles of equal access, and provides tips on how audiences can incorporate those principles into their everyday work. We customize each presentation to focus on the needs of each audience. Subtopics include: teaching strategies, event planning, student services, and accessible documents and media.
  3. Disability as Diversity: In this presentation, we will briefly review the history of the disability rights movement, explore disability as an aspect of diversity, and discuss how this framework can inform your practice.

Empower Your Career with the Workforce Recruitment Program

The University of Kentucky Disability Center participates in the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP), which is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities. The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and the U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Diversity Management & Equal Opportunity (ODMEO) manage the program, which continues to be successful with the participation of many other federal agencies and sub-agencies. Since the program's expansion in 1995, over 6,000 students and recent graduates have received temporary and permanent employment opportunities through the WRP. For more information please contact the DRC or visit the website: https://wrp.gov.

Service and Support Animal Polices

What do I need to know regarding Service Animals & Service Animals in Training at UK?

Service animals are defined as dogs (and in some cases, miniature horses) that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. Examples of such work or tasks include guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA (www.ADA.gov).

Service animals in training are considered to be dogs or miniature horses that are being trained to perform a specific task or function for an individual with a disability.

While your animal is on campus you have the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain all required vaccinations.
  • Maintain control of the animal by leash, harness or tether, unless it interferes with the service performed by the animal.
  • Ensure the animal is well cared for at all times.
  • Properly contain and dispose of all animal waste in appropriate outside trash containers.

Failure to follow these guidelines may result in the requirement of the removal of the animal from campus buildings and residence halls. If this occurs, the student may appeal the decision through the campus EEO director.

Service animals are typically free to be on duty throughout the campus and all university facilities open to students, however the university may prohibit the use of service animals or animals in training due to health or safety reasons, where service animals may be in danger, or where their use may compromise the integrity of research or cause health issues.

UK personnel are not responsible to provide care or food for any service animal including, but not limited to, removing the animal during emergency evacuation for events such as a fire alarm. Emergency personnel will determine whether to remove the animal and may not be held responsible for the care, damage to, or loss of the animal. An individual with a disability may be charged for any damage caused by his or her Assistance Animal beyond reasonable wear and tear to the same extent that it charges other individuals for damages beyond reasonable wear and tear.

Further questions regarding service animals may be directed to the Disability Resource Center

What do I need to know regarding Support Animals (Comfort Animals) at UK?

A support animal (SA) is a companion animal which provides therapeutic benefit, such as alleviating or mitigating some symptoms of the disability, to an individual with a mental or psychiatric disability. Support animals are typically dogs and cats but may include other animals. To be afforded protection under United States federal law, a person must meet the federal definition of disability and must have a note from a physician or other medical professional stating that the person has that disability and that the emotional support animal provides a benefit for the individual with the disability and is a required aspect of treatment. An animal does not need specific training to become a support animal. In the U.S., federal protection against housing discrimination is afforded under two federal statutes: Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Federal Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 (FHAA).

The University of Kentucky requires all support animals be registered through the Disability Resource Center prior to coming to campus. Dogs and cats must be housetrained prior to coming to campus and have all of the required state or local vaccinations. Because of the confines of university residential space, animals larger than 75 pounds cannot be placed in the residence hall. The species of animals allowed will be determined by the Disability Resource Center. Unless specifically indicated in writing by the Disability Resource Center, support animals are only permitted in the residence hall where the student resides. During the registration process you will need to make an appointment with the DRC and provide an updated vaccination record for the animal, and completion of the UK Disability Resource Center Support Animal Verification Form, which must be completed by a qualified professional.  While not an exhaustive list, examples of "qualified professionals" include treating physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists and licensed counselors. The student must also provide a copy of the updated vaccination records (as applicable depending on the type of animal), a picture of the animal and completion of the Service/Support Animal Roommate Agreement.  All requisite forms are located at the bottom of this page or can be requested at the DRC at drc@uky.edu or 859-257-2754.

Students seeking to have a support animal will need to complete the online intake and attach the required documentation as noted above. After the intake is received, the DRC will schedule an appointment with the student to review the documentation and the policies and procedures regarding animals on campus. Once that process is complete the animal can reside in the residence hall. Documentation of the continued necessity of the animal must be provided on a yearly basis.

UK personnel are not responsible to provide care or food for any emotional support animal including, but not limited to, removing the animal during emergency evacuation for events such as a fire alarm. Emergency personnel will determine whether to remove the animal and may not be held responsible for the care, damage to, or loss of the animal.

While your animal is on campus you have the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain all required vaccinations.
  • Maintain control of the animal by leash, harness or tether, or properly contained in an appropriate container any time the animal is outside of your room or common area of the suite style rooms.
  • Ensure the animal is well cared for at all times.
  • Emotional support animals may not be taken into study rooms, laundry facilities, dining halls or other buildings on campus.
  • Work cooperatively with Residence Life staff to resolve issues that might arise due to the presence of the animal.
  • Live animals cannot be brought on campus to be fed to emotional support animals.
  • Properly contain and dispose of all animal waste in appropriate outside trash containers.

Failure to follow these guidelines may result in the requirement of the removal of the animal from the residence hall or campus. The handler may be charged for any damage caused by his or her Assistance Animal beyond reasonable wear and tear to the same extent that it charges other individuals for damages beyond reasonable wear and tear. If either of these events occur, the student may appeal the decision through the Office of Institutional Equity and Equal Opportunity. The animal will need updated documentation from their treating professional of the necessity of the animal as part of their treatment, and all other required forms and vaccination records on a yearly basis.
