Center for Support and Intervention

Center for Support and Intervention

CSI Training

Campus partners, student organizations, and other offices can request a 30-60 minute training presentation from the Center for Support and Intervention. Trainings cover the reporting process to our office, what we provide for our students, ways to partner with our office and work collaboratively, and our staff directory.

Graduate and Professional Student Support Group

In the Graduate and Professional Student Support Group, graduate and professional students can seek support around any number of issues that are interfering with or an outgrowth of their graduate/professional school study.

Common discussions include:

  • stress of graduate/professional school
  • lack of progress or productivity
  • procrastination
  • deciding whether or not to stay in a program
  • problems with advisors or committees
  • financial strain, often due to funding issues

Some concerns, such as family or health issues, arise that are not specific to graduate/professional school but impact performance and progress. Many students seek out the group prior to major milestone events such as qualifying or major exams, dissertation/thesis defenses, and searching for jobs for post-graduation employment. Topics can vary from meeting to meeting depending on the needs of the students present.

To participate in the Graduate and Professional Student Support Group, call the Counseling Center at (859) 257-8701.

Services and Resources

Get Yourself Tested (GYT) Clinics

Get Yourself Tested (GYT) Clinics are a partnership between University Health Service and POWER to provide students with monthly opportunities to get STI screenings done at outreach events. Students attending these events will also receive sexual health information and resources. Additional clinics for HIV testing will also be offered throughout the semester, with testing provided through UK HealthCare.

Sexual Health Presentations

Sexual health presentations and events can be provided by request. Presentations cover various topics, including basic sexual health knowledge, communication, and body normalcy, or they can be created to cater to specific content. The Student Wellness Coordinator or the Sexperts may provide these presentations.

Sexual Health Resources

Sexual health resources, including condoms, lubricant, dental dams, etc., can be obtained at any Sexpert or sexual health event. These items can also be obtained by coming to the POWER wing of the 3rd Floor Gatton Student Center East Wing. Condoms can also be obtained in the 2nd-floor restrooms at the University Health Service building.

Sexual Health Care

Sexual health care is provided to students by University Health Service. Students can be seen for GYN/GU services, including pap smears and birth control. They can also be seen for STI examination. These services are included in the student health fee but can also be utilized with private health insurance or a pay out-of-pocket option. There are also community options for testing through the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department and AVOL.

Speak with an Advocate

The Survivor Advocates at the VIP Center have received specialized training and education on survivor-centered and trauma-informed advocacy and support.  VIP Survivor Advocates can help survivors in a variety of ways, such as by providing emotional support and validation, linking to on-campus and community resources, assisting with formal reporting processes, connection to legal advocacy, safety planning, and academic, housing, and parking advocacy.

VIP Survivor Advocate offices have been designed and informed by our Advocates and Survivors to create a trauma-informed environment that accommodates the physical, psychological, neurological, mental, and emotional needs of survivors.  When survivors are with a VIP Advocate, they can expect to have their safety prioritized, feel empowered and trusted to make the decisions that are safest and most productive for them and be the director of the conversation topics discussed.

You may call (859) 257-3574 or email us at vipcenter@uky.edu to schedule an appointment with a free and confidential survivor advocate.  We offer to meet in person at the VIP Center, or HIPAA-compliant Zoom.
