Do's & Don'ts Game Day Campaign

Around campus you notice increased attention on game days and alcohol use. That is because for some of our students football games and alcohol-related game day activities puts them at greater risk of harm.  The Do’s and Don’ts campaign promotes school spirit while encouraging behavior to reduce alcohol-related risks. With 22% of college students nationally drinking at least weekly, this initiative helps students enjoy game day traditions, like the 'C-A-T-S Cats, Cats, Cats' cheer, while emphasizing strategies to lower alcohol-related risks—such as drinking water between alcoholic beverages, eating high-protein meals, and limiting alcoholic drinks to one per hour. For some students sporting events often correlate with binge or heavy episodic drinking, which can lead to serious consequences, including academic decline, health problems, and an increased risk of accidents or assaults, affecting both drinkers and non-drinkers alike.

Led by POWER, a well-being prevention unit at UK, this campaign also promotes social wellness, part of POWER's promotion of the SAMSHA 8 dimensions of wellness. By encouraging positive social interactions and lower risk decision-making, it helps students establish habits that contribute to long-term well-being. Simple tips, such as moving your car before 7 am and sticking with friends, further promote safe, fun, and memorable game day experience for everyone.

Collegiate Recovery Community

The Collegiate Recovery Community provides a no-cost support system to students who are working to improve their addictive behavior, who are curious about making changes, and those who are impacted by their friend or family member's addictive behavior. Weekly recovery meetings are entirely student-led and are all-recovery welcoming. Office of Student Conduct

The student conduct process helps students learn, mature, and develop greater self-awareness while balancing the needs of the UK community.  When student behavior does not model UK’s values, the student conduct process is used to uphold the standards of UK. The Code of Student Conduct (Code) promotes the core values of the UK, including integrity, respect, responsibility and accountability, and sense of community. It can be challenging to do your best in class if you have trouble meeting your basic needs such as being hungry or worried about when your next meal will be.

If this is you, you can come to the Big Blue Pantry and take a bag of food items while being mindful that there are others needing this shared community resource for emergencies. We ask that Pantry visits be limited to three visits per month and if you must utilize this resource regularly, we will connect you with the Financial Wellness program to get budgeting and other financial support. Or you might be eligible for the Swipe Ahead program.

Tuesday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Wednesday: 2 - 5 p.m.

Appointments are available by request.

What to expect on your first visit to the pantry:

When you come visit the Big Blue Pantry, you will be invited to take one of our reusable bags (if you don’t have one already) and fill it with whatever you need from our shelves. Once you have finished, you will weigh your bag (there is no limit) and fill out a short digital survey. All information is kept confidential.

Remember, this is NOT a grocery store and should not be your only or ongoing food resource.

What can I find at the pantry?

We have canned foods, dry goods (rice, pasta, noodles, cereal), "heat and eat" meals, common kitchen staples like milk, bread, butter, cheese, etc. and personal care items such as shampoo, soap/body wash, toothbrushes, toothpaste, menstrual hygiene items, and shaving products. We also try to keep small quantities of meat and fresh produce, but those items tend to go quickly!

The Pantry is typically restocked twice per week.

Eating Concerns Dietitian Services

Eating Concerns Dietitian Services:

The registered dietitian (RD) will work with students who are struggling with their relationship with food.  Whether an eating disorder, disordered eating or other eating concerns the RD will help the student explore their thoughts about food, body and/or movement, their eating behaviors and barriers to recovery. Individualized recommendations will be made in regards to nutritional needs, meal planning and weight restoration, as needed.

Nutrition Care Philosophy:

The RD utilizes an evidence-based, weight-inclusive philosophy. They embrace well-being independent of weight through a non-diet, Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating approach.  They focus on establishing life-long behaviors recognizing that weight is not a behavior.  The RD helps students develop a positive relationship with food by achieving adequacy and consistency without rigid rules or restriction.

Health at Every Size (HAES)

HAES, or Health at Every Size, acknowledges that well-being and healthy habits are more important than the number on the scale. HAES works on disproving societal expectations of thinness by proving that health is independent of body size.

Principles of HAES

  1. Weight Inclusivity: Accept and respect the inherent diversity of body shapes and sizes and reject the idealizing or pathologizing of specific weights.
  2. Health Enhancement: Support health policies that improve and equalize access to information and services.
  3. Respectful Care:  Acknowledge our biases, and work to end weight discrimination, weight stigma, and weight bias.
  4. Eating for Well-Being: Promote flexible, individualized eating based on hunger, satiety, nutritional needs, and pleasure, rather than externally regulated eating plan focused on weight control.
  5. Life-Enhancing Movement: Support physical activities that allow people of all sizes, abilities, and interests to engage in enjoyable movement, to the degree that they choose.

Emergency Basic Needs Fund

Today’s student faces increased costs of higher education while federal grants and loans continue to shrink. Many students are one emergency away from dropping out of school because of their inability to pay their bills. The solution we have turned to are emergency award grants.  These grants are typically around $500 and can support students who are experiencing a financial crisis, that for many of us would be an uncomfortable hit to our savings account, but for these students, it may mean walking away from an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Students must apply for these emergency grants and provide the necessary information and documentation. This process allows for student at financial risk for leaving to institution to connect with a Basic Needs Coordinator who can provide additional resources, referrals, and financial education.

Fit Academy is the first step to being a fitness instructor. Coming in as a freshman in the fall, I was intimidated. I soon realized I was welcomed into a community not just of group fitness instructors but of kind, motivated people who really cared to see me succeed. They worked with me all semester to ensure I was ready to fly solo. Cheering me on every step of the process and still today.

Fit Academy perfectly prepared me to be an instructor! Week by week progression of leading classes and mentoring helped me gain confidence in my abilities. Having peers in the program also made me more comfortable and excited for training. There truly is support from all around and I highly recommend pursuing Fit Academy.

Going through Fit Academy has been one of my favorite, and most rewarding decisions that I have made while at UK. The experiences and opportunities I have gotten to be a part of, the friendships I've made, the knowledge I have learned, and the personal growth through this experience have been nothing short of amazing. I am so grateful that I decided to go through this program to become a personal trainer, and I would make the same decision a million times over. If you have a strong passion for fitness and helping others, I couldn't recommend this program enough. Thank you, UK for having this opportunity!
