Jennifer Smith
Assistant Director, Career Advising
Jennifer is originally from the small town of Fulton, KY and makes her return to the state after living and working in Indiana for the past 13 years. She has worked in the career advising field for over 10 years. Before accepting her role at UK, Jennifer worked as a Career Coordinator at the University of Southern Indiana with the Career Services and Internships Office. Prior to USI, she worked as an Employment and Training Advisor with the Department of Workforce Development. Jennifer graduated from Murray State University with a bachelors in outdoor recreation & leadership and a master’s in human development and leadership. While she wasn’t exactly sure of her career path in college, she always knew that she wanted to work with and help people.
Prior job that shaped her: In her position at WorkOne, she was introduced to the world of career advising. Reflecting on her time in high school and college, she realized how much she could have used someone to offer guidance on career options. A mixture of past lived experiences and this role is what drives her to make a positive impact in the lives of others. She strives to be a helpful resource for students in their personal/professional development.
What she enjoys doing outside of work: Exploring new places, learning, watching sports, spending time with friends, being outdoors – hiking/kayaking/star gazing.
A goal in life: To approach people and situations with kindness, empathy and compassion.
Fun fact: I was on the drumline in jr. high/high school. At 5’0”, I carried the biggest base drum in the line instead of the football players, before moving up to lead snare.
