The University of Kentucky proudly hosted the 4-H Teen Conference this past week, welcoming teens from across the state to campus. As part of the conference, participants were able to choose their own path of activities, 19 of whom chose to spend time with Campus Recreation.

Over the course of two days, we welcomed the group into the Johnson Center, where we set up a series of stations designed to help them live out the 4-H motto: “To make the best better.”

How do we do that? By offering some familiar and new experiences that challenge comfort zones and expand their definition of fun, fitness, and teamwork.

The group was divided into two sections, Groups A and B, and rotated through several stations:

  • Group Fitness: Caroline, one of our talented student instructors, led a LesMills BodyBalance class that pushed their strength, balance, and endurance. She made such an impact that students asked the next day if she would be leading again.
  • Climbing Wall: Students reached new heights—literally. Many had never climbed before and it was a challenge to even get started. When one student hesitated, our Executive Director offered encouragement, reminding her, “It’s okay to be scared, you can’t be brave without being scared,” and assured her of safety through the belay system. With renewed confidence, she made it to the top.
  • Intramurals: On day one, the groups faced off in fast-paced relay races on the basketball courts, building teamwork, energy, and plenty of laughs. The competitive spirit carried into day two with volleyball games that mixed seasoned players and first-timers. With encouragement and quick coaching, everyone got involved, showing off their skills and sportsmanship in a fun, active environment.

We also built in some free time so students could stay active on their own terms—walking or running the track, trying pickleball, racquetball, or jumping into another volleyball game. The participants embraced the experience with enthusiasm and competitive spirit.

Our goal was simple: give them access to a variety of activities and a glimpse of what it means to belong, move, and thrive in a campus recreation setting. We hope the confidence and curiosity sparked here stays with them as they consider their future college paths.

We can’t wait to welcome the next group in 2026!
