Family Handbook for Talking to College Students About Alcohol
Alcohol and drug use can have a significant negative impact on a college student’s life and on the campus community. Research has shown that parents and families can play an important role in influencing this behavior. We have put together a resource guide to help you, as a parent or family member, in understanding alcohol and drugs on college campuses and having this conversation with your student. To download the handbook, click here.
Office of Student Conduct
The student conduct process helps students learn, mature, and develop greater self-awareness while balancing the needs of the UK community. When student behavior does not model UK’s values, the student conduct process is used to uphold the standards of UK. For more information about the Office of Student Conduct click here.
POWER collaborates with the Office of Student Conduct to administer alcohol and other drug sanctions outlined in a student's Restorative Action Plan.
Amnesty
Students who seek emergency assistance on behalf of persons experiencing drug or alcohol-related emergencies, as well as the student experiencing the emergency, may receive amnesty meaning they may not be charged or receive restorative actions for violations of drug or alcohol-related policies in the Code of Student Conduct. For more about the amnesty policy click here.
The University of Kentucky's hazing policy includes an amnesty provision for victims, individuals, and student organizations who report hazing incidents. This policy encourages reporting by offering the possibility of avoiding disciplinary action for past hazing activities when self-reporting occurs. More information about the hazing amnesty policy can be found here.
Per Adminstrative Regulation 6:2, both the Complainant & Respondent in sexual harassment/misconduct cases have the right to receive amnesty for certain types of student misconduct, such as alcohol or drug violations. This means if in the course of an investigation Office of Equal Opportunity becomes aware of such violations it wouldn't make a referral to student conduct for disciplinary action. Students may be referred for supportive education related to substance use and/or require substance use education and/or assessment for a respondent who's found responsible when that is a factor in the case. More information can be found here.
Mandated Education and Workshops
