Developing Course Guided Experiential Education

Designing an EXP Course Credit Experience

  • If you are looking to create a co-hort experience for students under an EXP course section, then you can schedule an EXP Course Consultation appointment with the Office of Experiential Education.

Learning Contracts

  • If a student is seeking academic credit for an experience they have obtained, then most academic programs at the University of Kentucky will require the student to complete a learning contract/agreement. In some learning contracts/agreements employers will be asked to review and approve the information being provided to the university by the student.
  • At the University of Kentucky, we do not have a learning contract/agreement for students that are not seeking academic credit. If an employer wants to obtain an agreement, then they can request to complete the University of Kentucky’s Common Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The employer can obtain this form by emailing expblue@uky.edu. The process to review and approve the MOU submission will typically take 2-3 weeks from the date of receipt of the MOU from the employer.

Designating Courses as Experiential Education

  • If you have a current course or are in the process to create a course that is experiential education, then you are encouraged to inform the Office of Experiential Education at expblue@uky.edu.
  • The Office of Experiential Education, the Registrar, and University IRADS coordinate the designation of experiential education courses by placing a course label in SAP.
  • The designation of the courses will allow the university easier access to obtain data needed for reporting.

Incorporating High Impact Practices

  • Successful implementation of a high impact learning experience would integrate at least four of the eight elements of high impact practices outlined by Georgey Kuh and Ken O’Donnell (Kuh, G., O’Donnel, K., Reed, S. (2013). Ensuring Quality & Taking High-Impact Practices to Scale. Washington, DC: AAC&U).
    • Performance Expectations
    • Time and Effort Applied by the Student
    • Interaction with Collaborations
    • Intercultural Opportunities
    • Frequent, Timely, and Constructive Feedback
    • Critically Reflective Opportunities
    • Real-World Application
    • Knowledge Demonstration at the End of Experience

Incorporating NACE Career Readiness Competencies

  • The National Association of Colleges and Employers has designed eight Career Readiness Competencies to provide guidance in key areas for success in the workplace. The eight Career Readiness Competencies are:
    • Communication
    • Critical Thinking
    • Equity & Inclusion
    • Leadership
    • Professionalism
    • Teamwork
    • Technology
  • It is encouraged to look at your current course curriculum on how you may already be incorporating one or all the eight competencies.
  • It is encouraged to add to your syllabus a statement on the NACE Career Readiness Competencies and which competencies will the student(s) be developing by participating in your course.

Hosting Employers in the Classroom

  • If you would like to invite employers into classroom and you would like to speak with a member of the Employer Engagement team then you can email hireblue@uky.edu

Developing On-Campus Experiential Education Experiences

Designing an Experience

  • If you are an on-campus administrator that is looking to design an experience for a current UK student or a non-UK student and you would like to discuss job descriptions, marketing of positions, posting of positions, or structure for a high impact experience then you can schedule an Experiential Education- Employer Consultation with the Office of Experiential Education.
