Supporting Students Who Use Paratransit Guidance for Supporting Classroom Flexibility and Access

What is it?

Paratransit is the university’s on-campus transportation service that supports students with temporary or permanent mobility impairments. The service provides rides to and from academic buildings, residence halls, and other campus locations to help students access their classes and campus activities safely and efficiently.

Who uses this service?

Students use Kentucky Paratransit for a variety of reasons, including chronic illnesses, temporary physical disabilities, lower-extremity injuries, or other mobility-related conditions. While some students rely on the service throughout the semester, others may use it temporarily while recovering from a condition that affects walking or endurance.

Why does this matter for faculty?

Because the Paratransit service operates across a large and busy campus, students may occasionally arrive a few minutes late to class. Delays can occur due to factors outside of the student’s control—such as traffic, route adjustments, or driver availability. These challenges can be particularly stressful for students already managing mobility or health limitations.

Tips for Faculty

  • Allow flexibility for students who use Paratransit and may experience occasional delays.
  • Recognize the effort it takes for these students to attend class; using Paratransit often requires advanced scheduling and coordination.
  • Communicate expectations early. Including a brief note in your syllabus acknowledging transportation or access-related challenges can help set a supportive tone.
  • Consult the DRC if transportation-related issues persist or if you’d like guidance on supporting the student’s continued access to class.

By maintaining flexibility and understanding, faculty can help ensure that transportation challenges do not become barriers to learning or participation.

Referring Students to the DRC

Faculty play a key role in connecting students with resources. Students who experience temporary or permanent mobility challenges, or any other condition that may impact access to the classroom, can be referred to the Disability Resource Center (DRC). The DRC helps students explore accommodations, support services, and campus resources to ensure they can fully participate in their courses.

Suggested Statement for Temporary Disability Referrals:

"You might find it helpful to connect with the Disability Resource Center—they can assist with resources to help you navigate class while you recover."
