When Questions Arise: Partnering with the DRC Mid-Semester

Mid-semester is often when questions about accommodations move from theory to practice. As exams approach, attendance patterns shift, or course demands increase, instructors may encounter situations where implementing an accommodation requires clarification or coordination.

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is here to partner with instructors when these questions arise. Whether you’re navigating flexibility related to attendance, deadlines, testing, or participation, early communication can help ensure accommodations are implemented consistently while maintaining the essential requirements of your course.

Reaching out to the DRC mid-semester can be especially helpful when:

  • A student’s accommodation intersects with course policies or participation expectations
  • An exam, lab, or clinical component requires advance planning
  • You’re unsure how much flexibility is appropriate or how to apply it equitably

These conversations are not about changing course standards but about finding practical, course-specific solutions that support access and learning. The DRC works collaboratively with instructors and students to clarify expectations, reduce confusion, and support a smoother experience for everyone involved.

Faculty tips for smooth mid-semester collaboration:

  1. Reach out early: Contact the DRC as soon as a question or concern arises—don’t wait for the situation to escalate.
  2. Document agreements: Keep a record of discussions and adjustments to maintain clarity for both you and the student.
  3. Use the Course Flexibility Plan (CFP): The CFP is a helpful tool for outlining course-specific flexibility. Submitting a CFP ensures students know what to expect while protecting course integrity.
  4. Consult regularly: Even brief check-ins can prevent confusion and create a more supportive classroom environment.
