Hi, I’m Amber Singh! I’m a student and personal trainer with UK Campus Recreation. Being involved in Campus Rec has had such a positive impact on my college experience—physically, mentally, and socially. Here’s a look at how it's helped support my health goals and shape the way I take care of myself.

Q: How has participating in campus recreation activities supported your physical health goals?

Participating in UK Campus Recreation activities has supported my health goals by allowing me to train and grow in all areas of fitness. When I work out, I aim to train my body in all components of both health-related and skill-related fitness—cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, athleticism, and more.

Campus Rec gives me the space and tools to do this. Whether I’m at the gym, running on the indoor track, out on the rec fields, climbing the Rockwall, taking a group fitness class, going on an Adventure Trip, playing intramurals, attending a workshop, or participating as a Personal Trainer, I’m constantly developing my fitness and staying active. I like to be well-rounded and try different things, and UK makes it easy to do that.

Q: How do you balance staying physically active with your academic and social commitments?

I balance staying active with school and social life by planning it into my schedule. I literally block off time on my calendar for workouts—just like I would for class or a meeting. That time is mine, and I treat it like any other responsibility. I can’t just skip it!

If I know I have a busy week ahead, I move things around so I can still get my workouts in on different days or times. And if I’m feeling unmotivated or overwhelmed, I’ll go to a group fitness class or do a short, different kind of workout—something fun that still lets me take care of myself. For me, time management and finding a routine that works is the key to doing everything I want while still staying balanced and reducing stress.

Q: How has staying active through Campus Rec helped with stress or mental well-being?

It helps me reset. Staying active gives me a moment in my day to breathe and step away from the busyness of school, activities, and everything else life throws at me. It’s a way to manage my stress and protect my mental health.

Exercise is my “me time”, my daily reminder to take care of myself and fill my own cup. That time helps keep me grounded and feeling good, both physically and mentally.

Q: What role does Campus Rec play in helping you build connections and find community?

Campus Rec has been huge in helping me find community. I’ve made lifelong friends and meaningful connections through my job here as a Personal Trainer. The group fitness community is so supportive, positive, and full of energy—for both instructors and participants.

I’ve also loved meeting people through Adventure Trips. Those are especially cool because they often bring in international students, so I’ve gotten to connect with people from all different cultures and backgrounds. Every trip, I meet new, kind, and interesting people.

Through this job, I also get to give back—whether that’s through my clients or just supporting others at Campus Rec. It’s been a great way to build community while also helping others feel welcomed and encouraged.

Q: How has participating in wellness programs shaped your overall approach to self-care?

Wellness programs have helped me realize how important it is to care for all areas of health, physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual. Our health is one of the most important parts of who we are.

It’s easy to put other things first, but at the end of the day, we’re the ones who remain. So treating our body and mind like a temple is essential, not just for survival, but for fulfillment and joy.

It’s never too late or too early to start prioritizing yourself. Some days are hard, and sometimes we fall short, but we get back up and keep going. We keep growing, we keep achieving new goals. That’s what self-care is all about 😊.
