Fostering a Supportive Learning Environment

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Access Matters, a new monthly column from the Disability Resource Center (DRC)! Our goal is to share quick, practical tips and resources to help you create a more welcoming and accessible environment for all students.

Accessibility is about designing experiences where all learners can fully participate — not just students with documented disabilities. It's about flexibility, fairness, and proactive thinking.

Each month, we will highlight simple ways to make your courses, programs, and communications more accessible. In this first edition, we offer one foundational practice:

Creating screen reader–friendly digital content, which supports overall digital accessibility.

Tip of the Month:

Always ensure digital content — such as syllabi, readings, or announcements — is readable by a screen reader.

Why this matters:

Accessible design not only supports students with disabilities but also improves usability for everyone — a principle known as the curb cut effect.

Thank you for your partnership in creating a campus where every student can thrive. We’re here to support you — feel free to reach out to the DRC for consultation.

No More Forms? Yes, Please! Course Flexibility Plan Rolls Out This Fall!

We’re excited to introduce the Course Flexibility Plan (CFP) module in the DRC Online Portal, launching Fall 2025! This updated system will replace traditional flexibility forms, making it easier to manage accommodation plans for students with disability-related flexibility needs.

The CFP module is designed to streamline your workflow—saving time, reducing steps, and promoting clarity and consistency across courses.

Stay tuned this summer for helpful resources to guide you through the new process!

DRC Teams Instructor Forum

The Teams Instructor Forum is a dedicated space for faculty and instructors to share concerns, ask questions, and discuss challenges related to the DRC Online Portal.

This forum provides an opportunity to engage with colleagues, exchange best practices, and seek guidance on implementing accommodations effectively.

Whether you’re experiencing technical issues, need support navigating the portal, or have questions like, “What steps should I take if a student requests flexibility accommodations?" or "Where can I find access to the DRC Online Portal?" a dedicated DRC team member will be available to answer any questions and provide assistance.

The Instructor Forum encourages collaboration and ensures you have the resources and support needed to effectively implement accommodations.
