The Felix E. Martin, Jr. Scholarship

The Felix E. Martin, Jr. Scholarship awards financial support to academically outstanding students of Muhlenberg County, and alternatively Hopkins County, to attend the University of Kentucky. This scholarship is designed to increase access to higher education among local students who wish to earn a bachelor’s degree. Whether you are in high school and preparing for college or are considering transferring to the University of Kentucky, this scholarship may provide financial assistance to offset the cost of attendance.

Eligibility

All applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be given equal consideration by the University of Kentucky academic scholarship committee, which will select the recipients according to the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be graduates of a Muhlenberg County (Kentucky) high school. Should additional scholarship funds be available after all Muhlenberg County students are considered, then scholarships will be considered for applicants who are graduates of a Hopkins County (Kentucky) high school.
  • Applicants must be planning to attend the University of Kentucky to pursue an undergraduate degree.
  • Applicants must show potential for academic success by having a GPA of 3.0 or higher and earning at least a 24 composite score on their ACT. Transfer and current UK students must provide a copy of their high school transcript and qualifying test scores. Minimum test score requirements are based on the composite or total score from one test date. Combined scores, also known as a superscore, from two or more tests will not be considered.
  • Current college students who are attending an accredited community or private college, who meet the residency requirement and academic requirements, and who plan to transfer to the University of Kentucky are eligible to apply. However, previous college work will count toward the four-year term of the scholarship. Transfer students will not be eligible for renewal for a full four years.
  • Current University of Kentucky students are eligible to apply. Previous college work will count toward the four-year term. Current UK students will not be eligible for renewal for a full four years.
  • If an applicant is pursuing a double major, eligibility is limited to four years for first-time freshmen and an applicable number of years for current or transfer students.
  • Financial need, while not a requirement for the scholarship, may be considered in determining recipients when there are equally qualified candidates.

Award Selection

The potential for academic success is a key factor in determining the recipients for the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Scholarship. Proven academic accomplishments, either in high school or at a community college, will weigh heavily in the selection process. While not a requirement for awarding scholarships, financial need may be considered to determine scholarship recipients when there are equally qualified candidates. All recipients must enroll in the University of Kentucky. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years, providing successful academic progress is being made toward earning an undergraduate degree.

Application process

To be considered for the Felix E. Martin, Jr. Scholarship, students must apply for admission to the University of Kentucky by December 1, 2024*, and have a qualifying test score and high school transcript on file with the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Rogers Scholars Scholarship

The Rogers Scholars Program, whose namesake is Congressman Hal Rogers, was developed by the Center for Rural Development to address, and reverse, the high level of out migration suffered by the rural service area.

The Rogers Scholars Program is an intensive, week-long program focusing on leadership, technology, entrepreneurship and community service. Students apply during their sophomore year in high school and those selected attend the program during the summer before their junior year. The summer program is coordinated by the Center for Rural Development, which serves a 42 county area in southern and eastern Kentucky. Students are selected through a competitive application process to make up the class of 60 students each year. For information on applying to the Rogers Scholars Program, you may visit their website at centeryouthprograms.com/rogers-scholars/.

In recognizing the leadership development and academic strengths of the Rogers Scholars, the University of Kentucky is excited to partner with the Center for Rural Development and provide academic scholarship opportunities for students completing the Rogers Scholars Program.

Scholarship Opportunities

The University of Kentucky is pleased to encourage academic excellence and will provide a $1,000 per year, 4-year renewable scholarship to Rogers Scholars, provided the student applies for admission with the Office of Undergraduate Admission by December 1, 2024*. No additional application is required. Awards are offered pending early application and availability of funds.

Recipients must meet admission criteria at the time of application and enroll full-time each semester beginning in the fall term after high school graduation. The $1,000 per year Rogers Scholars Scholarship can be received in addition to the Provost Scholarship. If the recipient receives a scholarship of equal or higher value through another program, that scholarship will replace the Provost and Rogers Scholars Scholarships. Students may receive only one scholarship through the Academic Scholarship Program. Recipients must maintain full-time status and a UK cumulative GPA of 3.00 each semester. Awards will be payable in equal installments during the fall and spring terms.

Students who have a 31+ ACT score and a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average will be encouraged to apply for our Competitive Academic Scholarships. If a student is awarded a Presidential or a Singletary Scholarship, that award will replace the Provost and Rogers Scholars Scholarships.

*If a deadline falls on a weekend, the application will remain open until 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on the following Monday.

The University of Kentucky Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships is excited to offer Scholarship Universe as a resource for our students!

Scholarship Universe (SU) is an online scholarship platform that matches students to relevant, vetted external scholarship opportunities, as well as internal scholarships offered by the university. Each external scholarship opportunity a student sees on SU has gone through an extensive vetting process to ensure the scholarship is offered through a reliable and authentic source.

SU is available for currently enrolled UK students and admitted prospective students who have a UK linkblue account. Students can login to complete the student profile and search and apply for external and internal scholarship opportunities. The external scholarship opportunities are available through sources outside of the University of Kentucky.

External or Third-Party Scholarships

Students can search for external scholarship opportunities using ScholarshipUniverse

Students receiving scholarships from outside sources should request that their donor send the scholarship funds to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (University of Kentucky, 128 Funkhouser Building, Lexington, KY, 40506-0054) along with the student's name, the semesters the funds cover, and the student's linkblue ID.

If you are expecting a scholarship from an outside agency that is not currently listed, please contact the awarding agency to determine when the funds will be disbursed to the University of Kentucky. Once the scholarship funds are received by the University, it may take up to seven to 10 business days to be credited to the student's account. For questions, please contact externalschol@uky.edu.

Students should also contact student and/or parents' employers, churches, credit unions, and local clubs and organizations for additional scholarship sources.

Nationally Competitive Awards

Nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships are awards that are funded by sources independent of the University of Kentucky including non-profit groups, government agencies, and companies. Criteria for scholarships vary but generally include academic performance, financial need, community affiliations, and unique elements important to the sponsoring organization.

One of the primary responsibilities of the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards is to administer the campus nomination process for 12 major awards that require an institutional endorsement. For these opportunities, students must apply first to a campus review committee, which will then select the students who will represent the University of Kentucky. Nominees will receive feedback on their application and will be officially nominated by the institution.

There are many scholarship opportunities that allow direct application. For those awards, the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards provides advice and assistance to students preparing an application. The primary goal of this office is to recruit and prepare UK students with strong academic and extracurricular records to help them be successful in pursuing national competitive opportunities. Please visit the University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards for more information.
