FIT Academy Graduates Written by Maddison Kuehne
This spring, 20 students were selected to participate in UK Campus Recreation’s Fit Academy — a 10-week program designed to prepare students to become group fitness instructors at the University of Kentucky.
Each week, participants meet to practice their instructing skills and study for a national certification exam. While the program emphasizes knowledge and practical skills, Fit Academy also places a strong focus on building community. Students connect with peers who share their passion for wellness, often forming lasting friendships along the way.
Participants come from a wide range of academic backgrounds. This semester’s cohort included students majoring in Engineering, Marketing, Finance, Psychology, and Neuroscience — highlighting the interdisciplinary appeal of fitness and wellness.
Fit Academy students pursue a variety of nationally recognized certifications, based on their interests and instructional goals. Options include:
- NETA Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor (with in-house training for cycling instructors)
- Barre Above
- WERQ Dance Fitness – Cardio Hip Hop
- Les Mills BODYPUMP®
- YogaFit Level 1 – Foundations
Many students echoed the sentiment expressed by Fit Academy participant Leah Kokocinski, who shared: “I’ve always had a passion for fitness, and I wanted to share that passion with others!”
Advice from this semester’s graduates to future Fit Academy students:
“Be open to grow! This program is going to push you in ways you never thought, but in the best way possible.”
— Leah Kokocinski, Cycle Graduate
“Just apply for Fit Academy! It was so fun, and I made amazing connections with my fitness-passionate peers.”
— Bella Skibba, Barre Graduate
“I would say to go for it! It definitely takes time, but it’s easily worth it in the end.”
— Linden Coons, Pilates Graduate
Fit Academy typically runs each semester based on the demand for instructors. It is expected to return in the fall, with applications opening during the first week of classes.
Whether you’re looking to improve your instructing abilities or grow your confidence, Fit Academy will challenge you and help you become a strong, capable fitness professional — just like this semester’s graduates.
Congratulations to our Spring 2025 Fit Academy graduates!
