At University of Kentucky Campus Recreation, our members are what make the community thrive, and this month we’re highlighting someone who truly embodies consistency, discipline, and growth. Meet Johnathon, a junior civil engineering major who has turned Campus Rec into both his workplace and his daily reset.

From Student to Facility Manager

Johnathon joined Campus Rec in August of his sophomore year and is now a Facility Manager, playing a key role in keeping operations running smoothly. Originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, he chose the University of Kentucky for its size, opportunities, and the chance to branch out beyond his hometown.

“I wanted to come to a big state school, meet new people, and have access to as many opportunities as possible,” he shared.

A Daily Commitment to Movement

Staying active isn’t complicated, it’s consistent. His go-to is the gym. Whether it’s a quick lift, walking on the treadmill, or stretching, he finds time every day to move. “I’ve always been active, I played sports my whole life. I can’t just sit still. If I have free time, I want to do something productive with it.”

While he’s recently started branching out, joining an intramural soccer team, trying group fitness classes like cycle, and even exploring outdoor adventures, his foundation remains open recreation time in the gym.

Mastering the “Time Budget”

Balancing a demanding major, a leadership role at Campus Rec, and personal wellness isn’t easy, but Johnathon approaches it with intention. “It’s all about giving everything the time it needs. I sacrifice some things, like going out with friends, so I can prioritize school, the gym, and work.”

He describes his schedule as a “time budget,” a mindset that helps him stay disciplined and flexible. Some days start earlier than others, but his priorities remain the same, academics, fitness, and responsibilities.

Fitness as a Reset

Campus Rec has been more than just a workplace, it’s been a constant through the ups and downs of college life. “The gym became my safe haven. Freshman year, I was overwhelmed, but I always knew the gym would be open. I could go there, reset, and just focus on myself.”

That routine has become a powerful tool for managing stress and maintaining mental well-being. Whether he’s working out solo or occasionally with friends, that time is intentional. “A lot of times, I’m there to lock in. It’s my time to focus and recharge.”

Finding Your Fit

When asked what advice he’d give other students, Johnathon emphasized one thing, explore. “There’s so much to do, group fitness, intramurals, outdoor adventures, even esports. You just have to find what works for you.”

He encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and try something new, noting that Campus Rec offers countless ways to stay active and connected.

His “Why”

At the core of everything Johnathon does is a simple but powerful mindset. “I just want to be better than I was yesterday.”

Whether it’s in the classroom, the gym, or life in general, that drive fuels his consistency and growth.

Final Advice: Stay Curious

Johnathon’s closing message to fellow students is one worth holding onto. “Be curious. If something interests you, go try it. There are so many opportunities here, you just have to take the first step.”

From early mornings in the gym to long days balancing academics and leadership, Johnathon represents what it means to show up with purpose. His commitment to growth, physically, mentally, and academically, makes him a standout member of our community.
