Wildcat: 7v7 Soccer Season Recap Written by Susan Meredith & Melina Campbell
The 7v7 Intramural Soccer season has officially come to a close, and it was another year of exciting competition, camaraderie, and Wildcat spirit. With over 100 teams registered, around 1,315 participants, and about 280 games played, this season reflected the enthusiasm and dedication of our campus community to the sport of soccer.
Whether players were in it for the championship, the t-shirt, or just the love of the game, the energy on the fields was unmatched. Every evening, every day, every week, and all-season long teams were thrilled to partake in each game and created countless memories to add to their time at University of Kentucky.
CoRec Championship
The CoRec division concluded with a competitive final between #1 Seed and Torta Pounders, with the #1 Seed securing the championship title in a close 3-2 match. Semifinals saw dominant performances with each game leading to overtime. After a rain delay, Help Wanted and Torta Pounders finally started the match where the competition roared. Eventually, Help Wanted missed one too many penalty kicks and fell to the Torta Pounders. The Kickin’ Chickens also made a strong push toward the final, falling short during penalty kicks which ended the game with 1 goal less than the #1 Seed.
Open Rec Championship
In a tight championship match, Bing Bong and Beta Theta Pi remained scoreless throughout the entire game. The match reflected the competitive nature of this division and the high level of defensive play. Overtime was granted and a penalty kick shootout ensued. Each team was on the edge of their seat as it came down to one kicker and one goalie. Ultimately, Bing Bong scored the last penalty kick and rushed the field full of excitement to celebrate their victory.
Women’s/Sorority Championship
The Women’s/Sorority bracket brought standout performances throughout the tournament. The Pink Panthers squad had a long championship night ahead as they were launched into the championship by default. They put up a good fight to win the title but with only 5 players on the field, they were only able to see the back of the net once. With great sportsmanship, Kappa Kappa Gamma claimed the championship with 7 goals.
Thank you to all of our players, officials, and fans for contributing to a successful 7v7 soccer season. We look forward to seeing continued participation and sportsmanship across all intramural leagues throughout the year.
